Pronunciare la g in inglese

Un mio collega in ufficio sta cercando di imparare l’italiano tramite Duolingo, e si lamenta sempre di quanto siano difficili i verbi nella nostra lingua, specialmente le coniugazioni dei vari tempi con le varie persone. D’altro canto, questo è un concetto a cui gli americani non sono abituati, dato che in genere il verbo rimane lo stesso a prescindere dalla persona che compie l’azione. Ha anche difficoltà a ricordarsi quali oggetti sono maschili e quali sono femminili, ma su questo non saprei proprio come aiutarlo. Allora l’altro giorno la discussione è cascata sulla pronuncia, specialmente della G gutturale e palatale, che in inglese si dice rispettivamente hard G and soft G. Il che mi ha dato lo spunto per il post di oggi, in cui ti propongo un video che spiega le differenze ed alcune regole su quale usare e quando. Ora capisco perché la gente qui mi chiama sempre Gherlando 😒.

Soft g, hard g.

The letter g is a consonant it has a soft j sound and a hard g sound. The sound the letter g makes will depend on the letter that follows. The general rule is that if the letter g is followed by the letters e i or y then it will make the j sound. Some examples are: gentle, giant, energy, gym, angel, digital.

It’s important to remember that there are always exceptions. For example: girl, get, give. These are followed by the letters i and e, however they make the hard sound.

Hard g. The general rule for the hard g is that if the letter g is followed by the letters a o or u or any other letter excluding e i or y,  then it will make the g sound. For example: gate, agonizing, gossip, glass, angle, gum. Also, if the letter g comes at the end of the word, then it will make the hard g sound. For example: big, hug. Finally, it’s important to remember that some words can have a silent letter g. For example: knight, design, high. To avoid confusion, try to learn these rules and then look at some common exceptions.
